talkEXEC. Reflections: What We Learned and Where We’re Going Next

When we set out to create talkEXEC., the goal was simple: to build a space for association and nonprofit leaders to have real, relevant conversations about the challenges of leading today.
A Shared Experience
From the first keynote to the last conversation over coffee, one thing became clear: this is an industry that wants to learn, connect, and grow, but rarely gets the time or space to do it.
The people who lead associations and nonprofits carry complex responsibilities, often without large teams or big budgets. And yet, the pace of change around them in technology, operations, staffing, and overall expectations, continues to accelerate.
At talkEXEC., we had honest, practical discussions about what’s working and where we’re stuck. What emerged was a shared truth: progress in our sector doesn’t come from trying to do everything. It comes from focusing on what matters most.
What We Heard
Attendees described the event as “hands down excellent,” “quality from start to finish,” and “exactly the kind of professional development we’ve been missing.” That kind of feedback matters because it confirms that the need is real.
Every leader in the room was navigating change. The challenge isn’t just keeping up; it’s doing so while expectations keep expanding. Many reflected on the strain of trying to modernize systems, meet new standards, and maintain the same pace, all at once.
The Ah-Ha Moment
One of the biggest realizations to come out of talkEXEC. is that the pace of change itself isn’t the problem. The real weight comes from trying to meet new demands with old approaches.
We can’t afford to spend our energy in the wrong places. And when leaders from completely different sectors began nodding to the same frustrations (staffing challenges, governance headaches, digital overwhelm, etc.), it became clear: the work we do may look different, but the weight we carry is the same.
There’s deep comfort in that recognition. Because when we find others who understand our challenges, leadership doesn’t feel quite so lonely.
Our sector is changing. And the people who lead within it deserve spaces where growth feels shared, not solo.
Continuing the Conversation
We want the conversations started at talkEXEC. to keep going.
Over the next few months, we’ve invited our talkEXEC. collaborators - speakers, partners, and thought leaders - to contribute to a guest blog series. These pieces will explore the issues that surfaced during the event and dive deeper into what matters most to association and nonprofit leaders today.
Our goal is simple: to continue supporting this industry by sharing access to expertise and perspective at a time when there’s so much new, so much change, and so much opportunity.
What Comes Next
This was just the beginning of the conversation. The pace of change isn’t going to slow down. Expectations are rising while the hours in a day remain the same.
The biggest pressure for many of us isn’t just the workload, it’s the uncertainty. What don’t we know? Where are we falling behind? Which processes are outdated? What’s the right tool, the right time, the right next move?
That’s why community matters. Without learning from one another, we only ever address a fraction of what’s ahead. Executive Directors and association leaders often carry their roles alone, but they don’t have to.
talkEXEC. reminded us that we don’t have to figure it all out on our own. Together, we can keep learning, adapting, and leading — with focus, courage, and connection.
